Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program (CAPP)
The Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program (CAPP) provides participants with exposure to concepts that inform psychodynamic therapy with children and adolescents. The courses include an in-depth exposure to concepts from psychoanalytic understandings of development and psychopathology as they apply to children and adolescents. Psychodynamic principles and techniques are applicable in a variety of clinical settings, including clinics, agencies, hospitals, and private practice. The courses provide a solid grounding in psychoanalytic principles while being attentive to the realities of clinical practice in the current mental health environment.
The program offers two weekly courses—one didactic course and one clinical conference—during years when there are adequate number of students to form a cohort. The didactic curriculum consists of an overview followed by semesters focused on an introduction to psychodynamic principles, early childhood, latency and preadolescence, and adolescence, plus four semesters of clinical conference. Weekly case consultation is provided at a discounted rate of $75/hour. Those students who complete the entire didactic curriculum are eligible to receive a certificate of completion. However, it is also possible to participate in one or two classes for one or several semesters without committing to the entire two-year sequence.
In years that there are not a sufficient number of students to form a cohort, the program offers shorter courses on special topics related to child and adolescent psychodynamic treatment. Students who want to earn the two-year program certificate can take any missed classes the next time they are offered. These classes will run as soon as there are enough students to form a new cohort.
Additionally, formal CAPP students are welcome to attend the shorter course offerings. However, these short classes are optional and do not count toward the CAPP graduation requirements.
Full participation in the activities of the Institute is available to any qualified person regardless of race, color, creed, age, gender, marital status, disability, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.
